(2) There’re two main reasons.


This is a lame reason. But, it is what it is. Lee Kuan Yew (Law), his elder son Lee Hsien Loong (Math), his younger son Lee Hsien Yang (Engineering, not in politics), his wife Kwa Geok Choo (Law, not in politics), and other past/present top politicians were from Cambridge. So, there is more familiarity with Cambridge baked into the national psyche.

In the days of fledgling Singapore national development, there was disproportionate focus on STEM, relative to the Humanities. Engineering, Medicine, etc over supposedly gaseous Lit, Philosophy, Political Science. (The effect of this overhang is still apparent today.) Cambridge and Oxford are top universities in both STEM and the Humanities realms. But, Cambridge has a slightly more well-known reputation in STEM compared to Oxford. Conversely, Oxford in the Humanities. In Lee Kuan Yew’s memoirs, ‘Hard Truths to Keep Singapore Going’, tellingly, he talked about his pointed desire to enrol son, Hsien Loong into Trinity College, Cambridge, of Isaac Newton fame. Sonny did not dissapoint Daddy. He went onto be the Math ‘Senior Wrangler’, the top student of his cohort, tallying up to Dad’s calculus. He would’ve pursued Pure Math immortality.
