Can international students work in China?

Hi!


My name is Clara and I have been studying and living in China for while. I attended University of Nottingham Ningbo and defintely had a great experience. I came across this question and decided to answer since there is a lot of uncertainty when it comes to being a student in this country


The answer to this question has a lot of duality. A simple and straight clarification would be no. But this has more layers. In order to go to China as a student you would need a X1 or X2 VISA. For a longer stay, you would pursue an X1 and a residence permit. This type of permint does not allow students to work freely inside the country, however, there is another possibility


International students can work with the support of their university. For example, my university, offers interships and summer programms with different companies and institutions. Even with prestigious companies like Huaweii or L’oreal. So, in this sense you would be able to become an intern and earn some money as well. But what is more important, you could open a good door for future work opportunities. I feel like doing an intership in China is a chance to jump into the chinese market. You will learn experience and also hopefully, boost your level of mandarin. This type of companies, as they are linked to the University, will offer support to international students and positions in english, were they can feel comfortable. This of course, can lead into other interships and so on


If you want to work independetly from the University and work on your own in China, you would need first to earn an intership or work and then apply to another type of VISA. This is the only way. Some students try to work illegaly in China but I would not recommend it as it’s extremely dangereous and you can even get deported. Talk about it with your university, in Nottingham there is a website were internships and other work positions are published. I am sure that many other universities follow this format and will have websites were you can build a portfolio and companies can hopefully come in contact with you.
